Man jailed after attempting to pass fake $50 bill at Carson City casino

A 71-year-old man was arrested Sunday on a felony charge of forgery after he allegedly attempted to pass a phony $50 bill at a casino, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Roger Coney of Carson City was arrested at 8:18 p.m. in the 3500 block of Highway 50 East. According to the arrest report, the man went to the cashier's cage at a casino in the 3800 block of Highway 50 East to cash in a $50 bill.

The cashier cashed the bill and gave Coney a $20, two $10 bills and two $5 bills. The cashier noted she thought the $50 bill was fake and tested it, and it returned as fake. She asked security to locate coney before he left the casino, according to the arrest report.

He was found and the money she gave him was recovered. The man then exited the casino. The man entered the casino again and went to the bar near the north end of the property. He ordered a beer and the bartender gave Coney change for a $10 bill. Coney asked the bartender what the denomination of the bill was used to purchase the beer. The bartender stated it was a $10 bill.

Coney said OK and walked away from the bar. The bartender stated the bill was tattered and the lighting in the bar was poor. He stated he put on his glasses and observed the bill was $50. The bartender stated he grabbed out a total of $40 more and located Coney on the casino floor. The bartender stated he gave Coney the money to the total of $50 amount. The bartender observed the man leave the casino.

The bartender took the bill to the cashier cage where he was informed the bill was fake. He stated he and other employees ran out to the parking lot and observed Coney driving away. Security was able to get the license plate number from the vehicle. The arresting deputy looked at security footage and was able to get a description of the man.

Officers then responded to an address provided from the license plate, knocked on the residence asked and asked for Coney. The officer asked the man for identification and conducted a warrant check on him, in which he was clear. Coney was read his Miranda rights and was asked if he wished to speak. Coney agreed.

The officer asked the man if he had passed a $50 bill to purchase beer. The man stated he had. He was asked if it was the same bill he had previously tried to cash at the cashier cage. The man said it was. The man declined when asked if he would like to complete a written statement of the event.

He was arrested on a felony charge of passing the fake bill. Bail: $5,000.

In other arrests:
A 43-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Tuesday, 12:34 a.m. on suspicion of gross misdemeanor battery. According to the arrest report, the woman had been brought to the hospital by the Carson City Fire Department. The woman became combative with emergency room staff when they attempted to put an IV in her arm. The woman allegedly kicked a nurse in the chest and scratched another nurse on the hand, which required bandages. The suspect was then medically cleared and released from the hospital where she was taken to jail. She faces two gross misdemeanor charges of battery. Bail: $5,000.

— A 28 year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday, 10:23 p.m. in the 1700 block of North Carson Street on suspicion of first offense domestic battery.
According to the arrest report officers responded after Carson City dispatch reported that the victim in a battery was unconscious in a bathroom.

Officers arrived and met with the victim who was awake and sitting on a bed while the suspect was outside the apartment. The suspect said he and the woman had been drinking and that she began to yell at him while he was in the bathroom showering because his music was too loud.

He said they had a verbal argument and that she slapped him on the face. He said the woman yelled at him and that he struck her on the left side of her face with a closed fist. The man said he didn't mean to hurt the woman but that she wouldn't let him leave the bathroom, the arrest report said. The man said after he hit the woman she fell to the ground and was knocked out. He said he immediately called the sheriff's office.

Paramedics spoke to the victim who said she did not want to go to the hospital. The arresting officer could see the left side of the woman's face was red and swollen. She told the officer that she and the man were arguing and that it got out of control. She became somewhat uncooperative with any questions and would not provide further detail. She did say she was five months pregnant and did not want to see the suspect go to jail.

Because the suspect admitted to hitting the woman and the woman had a red, swollen cheek, he was taken to jail and booked for domestic battery, a misdemeanor. Bail: $3,132.

— A 25-year-old Carson City woman was booked into Carson City Jail on a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued out of Tahoe Township Justice Court. Bail: $1,100.

— A 54-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 11:24 p.m. on suspicion of driving under the influence and having a warrant for his his arrest.

According to the arrest report, officers responded to the 3800 block of South Carson Street on a report of a possible drunk driver. Dispatch advised of the license plate number, which came back to an address in the 3200 block of Berkenfield Drive. The officer arrived at the address and did not see the vehicle.

He then saw the vehicle approach in which he stopped the driver and asked to speak with him. The man was asked if he consumed any alcohol. The man replied that he had consumed eight beers at a local casino. The man agreed to take field sobriety tests, which he failed, according to the arrest report.

The officer then administered a preliminary breath test but the man refused to provide a breath sample for the test. He was advised that he was being arrested for driving under the influence and that he also had a warrant for his arrest. At jail the man provided two breath tests that resulted in a .194 and a .186, according to the arrest report. Bail: $4,132.

Those arrested and facing charges are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
