On Friday Aug. 9, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the Nevada Highway Patrol, conducted a compliance checkpoint on U.S. Highway 50 near the Carson City county line.

Of the 1,741 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, no alcohol related offenses were found. A total of 13 citations were issued for various vehicle and drivers license violations.

Due to an unusual high number of motorists driving on Highway 50 during the time the checkpoint was in operation, there was a longer than normal delay for drivers however, the majority of comments made by individuals who went through was positive and supportive of law enforcements efforts to reduce the number of crashes and fatalities on this roadway.

The sheriff would like to compliment the residents of Lyon County and Carson City for helping do their part to make this highway a safer route to travel.

“It is a rare occurrence for a checkpoint not to encounter a DUI-related arrest," said Sheriff Ken Furlong. "This checkpoint was a strong early indicator of success.”
