Two people are dead and two are injured after a fiery three-vehicle accident on Highway 50 this morning near the Carson City and Lyon County borders in Mound House.

The two injured persons were taken to Renown Medical Center via CareFlight and their conditions are unknown at this time, said Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Hartline. The names of the dead have not been released and a chaplain has been commissioned to meet with families of the victims.

The accident, reported to the NHP at 6:36 a.m., involved a silver Chevy HHR that was traveling in the eastbound number one lane of traffic; a red Chevy pickup traveling in the westbound lane and a white Dodge Neon driving in the westbound number two lane, Hartline said.

The two fatalities were reported as being the driver of the silver Chevy HHR and the driver of the red Chevy pickup, Hartline said. The injured persons transported were those passengers in the red Chevy pickup, Hartline said. The driver of the white Dodge Neon was uninjured.

So far NHP has learned that the silver Chevy HHR went across from the eastbound travel lane to the westbound travel lane for unknown reasons, with the front of the silver Chevy HHR colliding with the red Chevy pickup. From that collision, the red Chevy pickup went into the path of the white Dodge Neon, Hartline said. At the scene of the accident the red Chevy pickup was fully engulfed in flames, which then spread to the white Dodge Neon.

It is not known how many of the occupants were wearing seatbelts or whether alcohol was a factor, Hartline said.
