UPDATE THURSDAY: Due to the cold temperatures associated with the storm, the Emergency Warming Shelter at Fuji Park will be open tonight, Dec. 24, in addition to the other three days it is scheduled to be open, Christmas night through Dec. 27, said Beth McCready-White, client services manager for Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH.
Those in need of a ride to the shelter can meet at FISH, 138 E. Long Street, at 7:45 pm, and the FISH shuttle will be here to transport them to Fuji Park soon thereafter. People will be then transported back to FISH at 7 a.m.
With single digit temperatures expected this weekend, the Emergency Warming Shelter at Fuji Park in south Carson City will be open on Friday, Christmas night, Saturday and Sunday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m., said Beth McCready-White, services manager with Friends In Service Helping, also known as FISH.
The shelter may be open longer based on the over-night low temperatures, 15 degrees or below, which the National Weather Service says may continue through early next week. FISH is continuing to coordinate with the Carson City manager's office and the Red Cross to provide a safe, warm place for people to get out of the freezing weather.
There will be volunteers who will supervise the warming shelter. McCready-White says as a reminder the shelter 1) will take in people who are intoxicated, but do not have any alcohol or drugs in their possession; 2) who have pets that will be under their owner’s supervision; 3) who have no shelter available to them; 4) who are not a danger to themselves or others.
Also, FISH will have its Shelter Shuttle available to transport people from FISH to the warming shelter each night at 6 p.m. Guests need to be at FISH by 6 p.m. The shuttle will leave around 6:15 p.m. and then back from the warming shelter to fISH at 7 a.m.
