Motorcycle rider involved in fatal Carson City crosswalk crash jailed on felony DUI charge

A Minden man was arrested in the Veterans Day 2014 motorcycle crash that killed a Carson City casino employee as he was walking through a crosswalk on Stewart Street.

Michael F. Trute, 56, turned himself into Carson City Jail deputies Wednesday, 11:20 a.m. for a felony warrant, driving under the influence of alcohol causing substantial bodily harm, issued June 30, 2015 out of Carson City Justice Court. His bail was set at $10,000.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol, Trute was riding a 1999 Blue Harley Davidson motorcycle going southbound on Stewart Street at the same time Michael Shields, 66, of Carson City was crossing at the intersection of Telegraph in the crosswalk when he was struck by the motorcycle. Trute was ejected from the bike and Shields was killed from the crash. The incident happened at around 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 11, 2014.

Shields was an employee of Cactus Jack’s casino and was walking home from work when he was struck in the crosswalk.

The speed limit in this area of Stewart Street is 35 mph and there with some roadway lighting. Alcohol had been suspected as the factor in the cause of the accident.
