In 2010, McCall Realty of South Lake Tahoe pledged to donate $20,000 of annual profits to five non-profit organizations benefitting the youth of South Shore. Owner Thane McCall is fulfilling that promise by delivering final contributions to the South Lake Tahoe Police Activities League (PAL), which will use the funds for after-school programs including a boxing club, bike club, recreation outing group and various sports teams.
“After-school programs keep kids off the streets and minimize opportunities for South Shore youth to get tangled up in drugs and alcohol,” said McCall on his reason for selecting youth-based organizations. “The future of our community depends on these kids getting started out on the right foot.”
PAL offers programs after school and during the summer months for kids to focus energy into sports including skiing, snowboarding, biking, boxing and competitive sports.
Funds provided thus far by McCall Realty allowed the boxing club to purchase a great deal of equipment including gloves and protective gear while using additional funds to assist with registration fees for sports teams ranging from soccer to softball, basketball, baseball and football. With the remaining contributions delivered this month, PAL hopes to purchase the materials needed to build a 16 foot by 16 foot sparring ring for use in daily practice. The donation will also aid in the purchase of tools and parts for the bicycle program, pay the upcoming season’s fees for on-going sports teams and cover swim passes for the recreation outing group.
“Our goal is that every child in this community will find a place to feel a sense of belonging and become a part of the greater good,” said Nicole Zaborsky, vice president of PAL’s Board of Directors. “Since 1999, we’ve seen several successes including reduced gang affiliations, high school students taking an active role in our programs by acting as program co-leaders and strengthened relationships between our participants and leaders resulting in trust and open dialogue.”
McCall Realty instituted a program last year to spread $20,000 among five area youth-based non-profit organizations. Other donation recipients in addition to the South Lake Tahoe Police Activities League include Boys & Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center, Tahoe Youth & Family Services and Court Appointed Social Advocates of El Dorado County.
