Carson City sheriff's patrol officers made a number of assault and drug-related arrests over the weekend, several of which were for felony possession. Among the arrests:
A 19-year-old woman faces a felony drug charge after Carson City authorities found she and a friend, also 19, to be under the influence, inhaling canned pressurized air around children and families at Mills Park.
Alexandra Schwartz of Minden faces a felony charge of being in possession of heroin, gross misdemeanor possession of pills without a prescription and numerous misdemeanor drug charges. The friend with Schwartz faces a misdemeanor charge of unlawful use of a controlled substance. The pair were arrested Aug. 18 at Mills Park at around 5:40 p.m.
According to the arrest report, officers were called to the park after someone had observed the pair inhaling or "huffing" an unknown substance at Mills Park. The park was occupied by several families, according to the arrest report.
Officers spoke with the couple, who both denied they had been huffing and inhaling but the 19-year-old man did manage to produce a can of "Duster" from his left pants pocket.
"Duster" is a pressurized substance commonly used to clean computer keyboards and screens. In drug circles, it is known to induce euphoria if inhaled or ingested. Both were arrested for unlawful use of a substance.
Schwartz consented to a search of her vehicle where a K-9 dog alerted officers to the woman's purse on the floorboard. Inside the purse officers found a metal spoon with a burnt black residue that resembled heroin. There was enough residue on the spoon to test. Also found was a hypodermic needle with a spoon, a small bottle of containing marijuana and several prescription pills rolled up in toilet paper. The woman stated some of the pills were Xanax and that she did not have a prescription for them.
Schwartz faces the following charges: possession of heroin, possession of a hypodermic device, possession of danger drugs without a prescription, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful use of a substance. Bail: $9,128. The 19-year-old man with her faces a misdemeanor charge of unlawful use of a substance. Bail: $1,132.
In other arrests:
— A traffic stop led to the arrest of two people for felony possession of drugs. Michael Mark Duffy, 51, and Celena Penfold, 18, were arrested Aug. 17, 11:02 p.m. at the intersection of North Edmonds and Brown. Officers stopped the vehicle after it had failed to use a turn signal.
During the traffic stop it was revealed Duffy did not have a valid driver's license and was on supervision with the Department of Alternative Sentencing. One of his conditions was to drive only with a valid license and insurance. The insurance on the vehicle was expired, according to the arrest report.
Deputies placed Duffy under arrest and spoke with passenger Penfold. An inventory was done on the vehicle where officers found a baggie of methamphetamine. Penfold was also arrested and the vehicle was towed.
Bail for Duffy: $5,739. Bail for Penfold, $2,500.
— A 29-year-old woman was arrested Aug. 18, 1:40 a.m. near the intersection of Champion and William Street. She faces a felony contempt of court warrant for her arrest and two misdemeanor charges, violation of conditions and possession of marijuana.
Melanie Huddleston, was served a warrant out of Lyon County in the 2100 block of Airport Road. Officers arrested her and located a small baggie of marijuana in her bra. Bail: $3,874.
—A 26-year-old Carson City man was arrested Aug. 18, 12:02 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sunrise. Juan Medrano-Aguiree faces a felony charge of being in possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of misdemeanor warrant contempt of court. Bail: $3,000.
— A South Lake Tahoe couple were arrested Aug. 16 after a traffic stop in the 400 block of E. William Street netted methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Paul Garrett Were, 40, and Denae Leilani Evans, 23, were stopped for having expired license plates, two improper lane changes and failing to stop at a red light at Roop and Carson streets, according to the arrest report.
Upon contact with the occupants, they were asked if they had any drugs or paraphernalia in the vehicle. The couple stated no. They were asked for consent to do a vehicle search. The couple agreed. A K-9 was used for the search which alerted officers to drugs in the vehicle. Officers found a used hypodermic device, a spoon with residue, two glass smoking pipes and two small containers with methamphetamine.
Both were taken to jail. Evans stated she had a meth pipe in her vagina, where she then voluntarily removed the pipe, turning it over to jailers. The pipe also tested positive for meth. Bail: $3,637 for each.
— A 48-year-old transient woman was arrested and faces a gross misdemeanor charge of battery on an officer after she did a "donkey type kick" backwards, striking a deputy in the thigh as he and others were trying to restrain her.
The woman was arrested in the 500 block of Carson Street on Aug. 17, 4:45 p.m. for disorderly conduct after yelling at officers and patrons of a casino and challenging them to fights. Among the woman's choice obscenities was the F bomb dropped several times, as well as telling an elderly couple to go f*** themselves, according to the arrest report. Bail: $2,874.
— A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested Aug. 16, 9:16 a.m. at Briarwood and Silver Sage. He faces a warrant gross misdemeanor charge of aiming a firearm at a person. Officers did a traffic stop and conducted a record search on a vehicle license plate which came back from dispatch as having an arrest warrant. Bail: $2,500.
— A 38-year-old Yuba City woman was arrested on a charge of gross misdemeanor possession of a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor domestic battery. Officers were called to the 1900 block of North Carson Street on Aug. 18, 4:41 a.m. for the domestic battery.
The woman and her boyfriend had been arguing at a local casino. The woman left the casino in the couple's car and returned to the motel where they were staying. The man found his girlfriend passed out on the curb. When he woke her up, the woman became violent with him, scratching and hitting him and ripping his shirt, according to the arrest report. The woman, who was intoxicated, was not injured and was taken into custody. During booking, the woman stated she had a switchblade knife in her purse. Bail: $5,774.
— A 36-year-old Stateline woman faces a gross misdemeanor charge of child endangerment. The woman was arrest Aug. 17 in the 300 block of Carson Meadows. Officers found the woman in front of a storage business with her children. Officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol on her breath. She was given a battery of sobriety tests, and she blew a preliminary breath test of .74, within the legal limit. Officers observed three open beer cans in the vehicle, one of which was half full and still cold. The woman said she had been drinking.
Officers asked if they could search the vehicle. The woman agreed. Officers found a small baggie of marijuana and a pipe in a backpack located on the passenger's side floor. The backpack was within reach of her 9-year-old autistic child. She faces the gross misdemeanor charge of endangerment, and three misdemeanor charges, including marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and open container. Bail: $4,931.
Those arrested and facing charges are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
