An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Sunday on eight misdemeanor charges including DUI, driving without a valid license and marijuana possession after nearly colliding with a sheriff’s patrol car while driving the wrong way drunk, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, a deputy was going northbound on North Roop Street approaching Stewart Street when he observed a blue Jeep going southbound on Roop at a high rate of speed. The deputy turned his vehicle around and observed the Jeep turn onto John Street and then made an illegal left turn onto Roop Street at an intersection where there is a right turn only due to a median blocking the left turn.

The Jeep then drove northbound on Roop in the southbound lanes toward the patrol vehicle. As the Jeep approached, the deputy had to swerve in order to avoid being hit by the Jeep. The deputy turned the patrol car around and activated his overhead lights, conducting a traffic stop, the arrest report states.

During the stop the deputy could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the man. The suspect identified himself and had red watery eyes and slurred speech. The officer asked the man for his driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance. He said he didn’t have any of the information and said he did not have a valid license, which was later confirmed by dispatch.

As the officer was speaking to the man he could see an open bottle of alcohol in the front passenger seat within reaching distance of the driver. The officer asked the man if he had recently had anything to drink. The suspect replied he had one or two beers. The officer asked him to step out of the vehicle. The man refused.

After three more requests the suspect got out of the vehicle. For his safety, the officer asked the man to walk over to the patrol car so he would not be standing in the travel lane on Corbett Street. He refused and then took a fighting stance toward the officer. The deputy detained the man and placed him into cuffs.

The officer asked if he would conduct field sobriety tests. The man declined and was taken into custody. While searching the man, the officer asked him if he had anything sharp in his pockets. The man told the officer he had a knife and was going to stab him in the heart, the arrest report states.

With the man in custody the officer prepared for a tow of the vehicle and during inventory found a clear container in the center console with a glass pipe and less than an ounce of marijuana. At jail the suspect refused to talk or submit to evidentiary testing. A telephonic search warrant for a blood sample was made by a judge. He was charged with DUI, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, no valid license, no proof of insurance, improper turn at an intersection, failure to maintain a lane of traffic and open container. Bail: $4,306.
