The nice weather brought out the crowds for Nevada Day, but few caused any problems for local law enforcement.
"We had a pretty quiet Nevada Day," said Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong. "We had a couple of spot incidents, most related to alcohol, but nothing serious."
A total of 24 persons were booked into Carson City Jail over the weekend, not much higher than a normal summer weekend. Most of the arrests were for probation/parole violations or for outstanding warrants, as sheriff deputies were out in force and checking IDs in instances where trouble was brewing. Other arrests were for fights and DUIs.
Only three people were arrested for felonies:
- James Yale Novak, 21, of Carson City, was arrested early Sunday morning in the 500 block of North Carson Street on a felony warrant for failure to appear, and misdemeanor possession of burglary tools. He was held without bail.
- Barri Lynn Ehey, 51, of Carson City, was arrested Saturday evening in the 3200 block of Market Street for felony possession of prescription drugs without a prescription and misdemeanor petit larceny. Her bail was set at $2,847.
- Wallace Lee Gilmore, 44, was transported to the Carson City Jail on Saturday evening for felony probation violation. He was held without bail.
Two people were arrested for gross misdemeanors. One, a 26-year-old Carson City woman, was arrested after taking a swing at a Sheriff's deputy. A 22-year-old Carson City man was arrested after a fight for having a "smilie", a metal padlock hooked to a bandana that is used as a weapon.
Furlong said that Nevada Day has changed into more of a family-oriented event in recent years, which he gives credit for the drop in criminal behavior. He said the department in the past would rack up $40,000 in overtime pay for personnel. But that has dropped to "hardly any" this year.
