Warming shelter for Carson City area homeless to remain open nightly through Jan. 3

With the forecast calling for continued frigid overnight conditions for the remainder of the week, the Emergency Warming Shelter at Fuji Park in Carson City will remain open for the next five nights, said Beth McCready-White, client services manager of Friends in Helping Service, also known as FISH, which operates the shelter.

The shelter will remain open evenings through Jan. 3, 2016. For Wednesday night only, the shelter will be open at 7:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. Persons needing a ride they can meet at FISH, 138 E. Long Street, and a shuttle will transport them to Fuji Park. Guests will be taken back to the FISH facility at 7 a.m. Thursday morning.

For Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights: the shelter will be open from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. Guests who need a ride they can meet at FISH, 6 p.m. each night and a shuttle will transport them to Fuji Park. Guests will again be returned to the FISH headquarters the following morning at 7 a.m.

The shelter takes guests who are intoxicated, but do not have any alcohol or drugs in their possession; who have pets that will be under their owner’s supervision; who have no shelter available to them; who are not a danger to themselves or others. Guests can come into the shelter at any time during the night, but cannot leave and then re-enter the shelter. FISH volunteers will be supervising the warming shelter.
