A 39-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday in the 1500 block of Monte Rosa Drive on suspicion of felony child neglect, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Carson Now is withholding the name of the suspect, who is the father of the victim, to protect the juvenile. The man was booked at 3:03 p.m. on $40,000 bail.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to assist the Nevada Highway Patrol who had a juvenile who was in need of supervision. Deputes met with an NHP trooper who had the juvenile in the back seat of the patrol car. The trooper first observed the 16-year-old walking south on I-580 near the Bellvue Bridge. The teen was not wearing shoes or a shirt.

The juvenile would only tell the NHP officer that his father abandoned him in Washoe Valley and that they live in Carson City. The juvenile would not give the trooper his name or any further information and requested the trooper drive him to Gardnerville.

A Carson City deputy met with the teen and spoke with him for a short time. The juvenile was only wearing gray shorts, did not have any money, identification or a cell phone. The boy finally told the officer his name and age. The boy said that his parents came home and he got in trouble because his chores were not done. His mother was attempting to spank him with a belt and he would not bend over to be spanked. He said his father grabbed him and put him in a position to be spanked. The teen said the father took a fire place poker and poked him in the ribs with the handle and then yelled at the boy and told him to get in the car.

The father told his son he was taking him to a homeless shelter in Reno and would give him one more chance to apologize. The boy told officers he sat quietly and didn’t respond. The father then stopped the car near the Bellvue Bridge and told the boy to get out of the car and that he was not welcome in the house anymore. The father then left his son on I-580 wearing only a pair of shorts. The boy didn’t have money, cell phone, shoes and there was not an adult who could assist him.

The father “placed the juvenile in a position where he may be caused physical pain, mental suffering and was left in a very hazardous position, being a pedestrian on an interstate,” the arrest report states.

A deputy met with the father and asked what happened. He said he and his son were arguing. He said they pushed each other a few times. The father said he told his son he needs to apologize or else he wouldn’t be able to stay at the home any longer. He said the boy did not apologize and that’s when he told the boy to get in the car. He said he gave his son an opportunity to grab shoes and a shirt but said his son refused, the arrest report states.

The father said he began to drive the teen to Reno. He said his son refused to apologize and said the boy told him to pull the car over. He said he stopped the car and his son got out. The father said he told his son to get back into the car and that his son ignored him and started walking. The man returned to his residence. The deputy asked the man if he saw the boy make a phone call or if there was any indication his son made arrangements to stay with someone. The father said he wasn’t sure.

Meanwhile an officer met with a 14-year-old female juvenile at the home. She said she was in the living room, getting spanked at the same time. She said her dad picked up a fire place poker but never hit or poked the boy with it. She said she heard her dad yell “get into the car, I’m taking you to the homeless shelter.”

The boy said he doesn’t have any friends in Reno and said if he wanted to get to Reno he would not have been walking back to Carson City after his father made him get out of the car. He said he wanted to go to Gardnerville to meet with friends after he gets some clothes. The father was taken into custody on suspicion of child neglect.
