A 62-year-old Sparks woman was killed attempting to cross the intersection of McCarran and Prater Way in Sparks on Thursday night, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Maria Ramon Rivera-Depineda died when she was struck by a black Ford Mustang driven by a 51-year-old Sparks man. The woman died at the accident scene, reported at 9:55 p.m., said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson.
The crash investigation details indicate the 1998 black Ford Mustang Sparks was traveling southbound on E. McCarran Boulevard just south of Prater Way in the far right lane. At the same time the woman, Rivera-Depineda, was on the east side of East McCarran Boulevard and attempted to cross the highway to the west outside of the crosswalk in front of the black Mustang when she was struck, said Gibson.
Efforts were made to revive Mrs. Rivera-Depineda but she succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the accident. The driver of the Mustang did stop at the scene and was cooperative with law enforcement. Alcohol or drugs is not a factor in this tragic accident.
The accident is still under investigation. That area of highway is three lanes in each direction with a turn lane. The area was dark with spot roadway lighting and the speed limit is 45 mph.
