Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey has scheduled their winter and spring line up of special speakers on the 2nd Thursday of each month during their public meetings. Each meeting also includes resource sharing, updates and discussion on issues of regional importance such as health and wellness, substance abuse prevention and recovery, education, job training, etc.

On Thursday, Jan. 13 at 9 a.m., the Coalition convenes at the Silver Springs Community Center at 2945 Ft. Churchill Road. Special speakers will include Lise Mousel- Martini of Access to Healthcare Network.

“Access to Healthcare” Explained at Coalition Meeting: Access to Healthcare Network’s mission is to provide access to healthcare for low-income, uninsured residents in order to fill an increasingly large gap of residents going without healthcare because they cannot afford benefits, and/or because benefits are not provided by their employers.

Access to Healthcare and its network of hospitals and healthcare providers are able to offer greatly reduced rates for service and has expanded its services to rural Northern Nevada.

Healthy Communities Coalition Work for 2011: The Coalition members and partners are working together in the upcoming year to implement school gardens, to improve school lunches, to expand community gardens and farmers’ markets and nutrition education, and to expand access to emergency food, mental health and primary health services and graduation coaching, workforce development, and student assistance services. The Coalition members are also working together to add additional community support for military families and veterans and to promote prevention and recovery from alcohol, tobacco, prescription and other drug use. The Coalition members will also work together to share emerging information about the health issues and legal issues surrounding Spice (synthetic cannabis), alcoholic energy drinks, and marijuana legalization.

The Healthy Communities Coalition (HCC) is a private nonprofit that includes people of all ages and from every community sector who have come together with the common goal of enhancing citizens’ ability to improve their own communities.
