Stewart Indian School in Carson City hosts its annual Father’s Day Powwow, Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15, and is one of the sanctioned 150 events celebrating Nevada’s Sesquicentennial – 150 years of statehood. Everyone is invited to experience the beauty and significance of Nevada’s Native American heritage through traditional dance competitions, music and elaborate costumes of this wonderful, rich culture.
The event, which begins Thursday evening with Alumni recognition, continues through Sunday with arts and crafts, traditional cuisine, and special events and exhibits, geared toward generation support and funding for the establishment of the Stewart Indian Cultural Center at the former school complex. While at the complex, all are welcome to experience the many history displays, as well.
Besides shining the spotlight on the Native population which is such an integral part of the area’s history and present-day life, the powwow’s purpose is to generate support and funding for the establishment of the Stewart Indian Cultural Center. The intent of the Cultural Center is to preserve the history and memorabilia of the school which closed in 1980 after 90 years of providing basic and vocational education and training for thousands of American Indian youth from Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico and other western states.
Due to the significance of this school and its important historical contributions, the property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is currently being maintained by the State of Nevada.
This is a drug and alcohol-free family event and there is no admission to attend. It is recommended visitors bring their own seating. The Stewart Father's Day Powwow Committee, Stewart Alumni Committee, Nevada Indian Commission, and State of Nevada are not liable for accidents, injuries or short-funded travelers.
