A woman is in custody and a pedestrian was flown by air ambulance from South Lake Tahoe this afternoon after a hit and run accident that happened on 12th and Emerald Bay Road near James Street shortly before 5 Tuesday.
The suspect allegedly hit the pedestrian and then sped away and was chased by South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Donna Kingman. The suspect then crashed the Subaru she was driving into a tree near Tahoe Island and then, blowing stop signs and failing to stop for police, crashed the car into the front of the Chevron Station at 2070 James near Eloise.
The condition of the pedestrian is unknown at this time. Paramedics on the scene reported the person was seriously injured and was flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno. The pedestrian apparently went over the top of the Subaru, smashing the windshield, before landing on the pavement.
Meanwhile police remained at the scene of the pedestrian accident with officers speaking with witnesses. The speed limit where the pedestrian was hit is 35 mph. Officers Tuesday night were tracking the suspect's path after the accident, picking up pieces of car debris along the way.
Kingman told dispatch during the pursuit that she had lost the suspect briefly, which, was about the same time the suspect crashed into a tree near Tahoe Island. Kingman later found the suspect and her vehicle smashed against the front of the gas station.
