A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the region later this week due to overnight temperatures predicted to be below 15 degrees. Carson City and Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, are partnering to protect those seeking refuge from the cold during the overnight period. The cold weather shelter, located at Fuji Park on Old Clear Creek road, is scheduled to open on Wednesday night beginning at 6 p.m. through Saturday night.
Those who would like to stay at the shelter may begin arriving at 6 p.m. Shelters are for people who are homeless or cannot maintain heat in their home; can care for themselves, and are not at risk to themselves or others.
No one will be admitted to the shelter in possession of drugs or alcohol, and pets must be under the control of their owner. The shelter closes at 7 a.m. each morning.
For more information on shelter operations call FISH at 775-882-6334.
Carson City's cold weather shelters are operated by FISH utilizing volunteer resources and donations.
“Providing an emergency cold weather shelter doesn’t ‘solve’ homelessness, but it does save lives," said Emergency Manager Bob Schreihans. "We’re proud to partner with FISH and the Carson City Parks Department to ensure the most vulnerable in our community won’t be left out in the cold.”
While precipitation is welcome in our region, it’s important for citizens to remember high winds, rain, and heavy snow can knock out power and communication services and make the roads dangerous. Carson City is encouraging citizens to be prepared!
