An early morning rollover accident took the life of a 23-year-old Carson City man, authorities report.

The man was found dead after being thrown from a van after it had rolled down an embankment in Ash Canyon about two miles up a narrow road, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jim Primka. The accident was reported at about 12:45 this morning.

Sheriff Ken Furlong identified the deceased as Eric Kvam of Carson City, according to the Nevada Appeal. Primka declined to give the name, saying it should come from the sheriff.

A 21-year-old passenger, identified by Furlong as Keaton Massey, walked about a half mile from the accident scene and used his cell phone to call for help. He suffered head and leg injuries and was taken by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno, Primka said.

The men were traveling in the van heading westbound up a narrow, bumpy dirt road when the vehicle, for reasons unknown, went off the side and rolled down the embankment. Officers hiked about 100 yard down the canyon and found Kvam who was deceased, Primka said.

"The 21-year-old was able to walk out and used his cellphone to call for help. We were able to locate him about a half mile from the scene," Primka said.

The accident is under investigation and it is unknown at this time if alcohol was a factor. The off-road area is used by four-wheel drive vehicles with camping nearby. The van is upside down and may be tricky to remove, Primka added.
